BOX

FLAT CLEAN DIGITAL VERSION
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
In this project, we were put to the task to create packaging for sleepwear in a gable box. I was most excited for this project since we are able to use four color process and get extra creative with it. I unfortunately rushed this. I had a difficult time choosing which idea to do since they all seemed like so much fun. When I went with the slumber party idea, I immediately went to drawing the characters. This took so much time and when I finally figured out which one I wanted, it took even longer to transform to vector to get better resolution. I had a lot of fun once I got the hang of the style and even more fun choosing colors. Putting it together was difficult and quite scary, but I'm happy with how it came out.
RESEARCH & BRAINSTORMING

MY RESEARCH:
For this project, I came up with three ideas: sleepwear for couples, tween girls at a slumber party, and vintage lingerie for women. My research for this included midcentury styles for the couples theme, Target branding for young girls, and coquette aesthetics for the lingerie. I really enjoyed looking at Target's marketing for their clothing brand "more than magic" that targets tween girls. Their style is bubbly, sparkly, yet simplistic with how it expresses itself. Their use of colors is soft and captivating to me. The research for the other two wasn't as exciting or in depth.
SKETCHES & DOODLES

SKETCHES:
My sketches for this mostly included the slumber party idea since that was the one I really wanted to do. I spent the most time working on this part to get a feel for the look of it and to help me move on to my intermediates. I did not like the style of the cartoon characters at first. It almost made me give up on the idea and start over on the lingerie one.
THREE THUMBNAILS
ROUND 1 THUMBNAILS:
My thumbnails were kind of rough on this project. I could have used a ruler, but I understood where things went and what creative direction I wanted to go down. I like how my thumbnail for the sleepover sleepwear set wasn't too far off from my final.

THREE THUMBNAIL DUMMIES

LONELY DUMMY:
As you can see, I only made one little dummy. I had a hard time keeping up with this project and saw this as max effort since I usually never make dummies this complex.
2 INTERMEDIATES

INTERMEDIATES:
Again, I should have made these tighter, but this is all I got. I loved drawing the disco ball, I ended up tracing it later since my other vector disco ball drawings didn't come out as cute. They could have had more text or a better understanding of what the back layout will look like.
FINAL HAND COMP

FINALLY:
Shockingly I actually did the final hand comp. There are a lot of changes I made once I got to the computer, but overall this helped me really sit down and figure out type and layout. I really didn't like the use of type on the front and the font/orientation used. I also couldn'y figure out the back either, so this was I guess helpful.
B&W COMPUTER PROGRESSIONS
ANNOYING:
This part was tricky, since the type on the front just wasn't working for me for the majority of this project. I ended up buying a font online that I really liked and edited it to make it more groovy for the final. I also changed where the scrunchies went and determined they didn't need their own panel, which worked in the end to save up some space.

B&W COMPUTER DUMMY

BLACK AND WHITE:
I didn't properly assemble this dummy, since I was too tired, but it did show the layout and size. I really liked my design and was dreading cutting out the heart. I should have practiced cutting out the shapes on this first.
COLOR STUDIES

FINALLY COLOR!:
I didn't include my final colors since it's at the top of the page. I think these color were great. I really liked the pastel rainbow, it really added to the disco theme. In the end, I still was attached to the purple shades with an accent of neon green.
FINAL THOUGHTS
WHAT I LEARNED:
It's 4 a.m. as I'm typing this. I never want to stay up this late again for a project. I need to not wait last minute to do the website part. I also needed to create a full size dummy to see how to assemble it since mine wasn't working right. Overall, I had a cute idea, I just wish my execution on the assembling part was better to show off the cute designs.
