Newspaper Ad

BakerI_NewspaperAdjpeg.jpg

The newspaper ad assignment challenged us to create a black and white newspaper ad with the made up company Tandells. The main theme for this ad was to incorporate the Utah Historical Preservation Society in Salt Lake City and sell five items. This was very tricky considering a preservation society usually is non profit. I researched some of the historical society's here in in Utah and noticed they had posts raising awareness for old high schools or Victorian homes. I chose to center my ad around the restoration of the newly categorized Granite Chapel located in Sandy.

Since the chapel's construction was finished in 1950, my designed centered around the mid century aesthetics and biblical terms to relate back to the church. When it came to selling five items, I chose items I felt related some way or another to those two aesthetics. If I had more time to work on this project, I would have altered the gray tones to contrast more, especially the boxes behind text. When outputting it, the colors become darker and blend more together, but on the screen, they seem more discernable.

Research & Brainstorming

As you can see, I went through many different ideas and found myself running into roadblocks as new things were introduced as requirements for this project. I went from homeless ghosts to midnight seances in historical homes. I ended up stumbling upon the old Granite Chapel and decided this would be perfect to work on. After some preliminary work, I found between the Granite Chapel and the McCune Mansion, that the chapel would be more fun to work on and less work in the end. I found myself already researching for mid century patterns to try out along with certain typefaces. Working with the fonts was a lot of fun since there were so many good ones.

Researching for old ads was a bit of dead end since most of them had a giant illustrated image, sometimes photographed and a giant stylized typeface next to it with a small paragraph at the bottom. It was usually to promote one item where I had to get create and sell five.

Sketches and Doodles

My sketches don't reflect my final or intermediates, but these were the only sketches I had since I changed my ad design about four times. I was super focused on the ghost idea for raising awareness about the demolition of a ton of victorian houses, but got stuck on the selling portion. I then moved on to the Salt Lake Cemetery design but felt like I didn't have enough solid concepts or will to do it.

Three Thumbnails

Like with the sketches, I moved forward to the thumbnails for the spirit and cemetery concepts. I didn't follow directions with this one and make different concepts for the three thumbnails, but this is all the work I had for it.

Two Intermediates

For my two intermediates, I began to put together the layout and ideas I wanted to move forward with. I showed my margins on the mansion design while I played with typefaces for the chapel. I also included my notes for revisions if I chose one of them to move forward with.

B&W Computer Progressions

I kept the same idea for placement for my design, but added different elements, subheads, and patters. I had more progressions, but unfortunately saved them incorrectly.

Final

I am pleased with the outcome of this project. I might not have followed the rules for getting to the point of starting it on the computer or doing enough sketches and thumbnails, but I think in the end, it came out better than I expected. Working with procreate and illustrator helped me put this together and expand my skills when it came to patterns and typefaces in creating a unified piece. I wish I would have corrected the shades of gray better to fit with each other more and add more contrast. The chapel could have been illustrated more into the same style as the rest of my design (mid-century). Overall, I enjoyed seeing this completed, not the thinking part. :)
