Poster

POSTER 5.jpg

Project Overview

The Poster project challenged us to create a 10''x16'' poster using only type and 5 spot colors. We could not use any illustrations or images, but we could create type figures or knock out shapes. We also had to choose a banned book in Utah for "Banned Books Week 2023" and include body paragraphs explaining why it was banned and our thoughts on it. We had to have a headline and include the author and our own byline in a creative way.

Researching banned books in Utah school districts was interesting. The books they banned were mostly due to explicit content or violence. The books I chose were violent and explicit, so I understood why they were banned, but their themes were deeper than that and reminded children to not let the world or people get to them and to experience life from multiple perspectives. I ended up choosing People Kill People due to the message and the design I made later on.

Sketches + Doodles

I didn't do a whole lot of sketches, but the two I did helped out in the long run for what design I was leaning more towards.

Thumbnails

My thumbnails were messier than intended, but I originally worked really hard on the Lolita one, second image. I really wanted to use that book for my project since I read up on it more and had and created an interesting design. The other two thumbnails I made because I had to and didn't care much for them.

Intermediates

I took my sketches and cleaned them up for my intermediates. They aren't as tight or have any body text, but they show the general idea and direction I was wanting to take. I ended up liking the People Kill People book design, and so did the class as well.

It just had a more interesting design and layout which had a cool type figure and filled up the space more than the Lolita design.

Computer Progressions

My computer progressions show the first one not having the headline or the gun outline included. It also had the body copy in different positions. I then changed it to have the body copy on the bottom left side, significantly smaller with the headline included on the top right. I also added more lines of text showing a gun blast and changing the text to say "Banned Books Week 2023".

Color Studies

COLOR SWATCHES.jpg

My color scheme given to me was called "Honor Student" which included dark blues with a brown and beige color. It was preppy and boring. I first chose very bright colors for my fifth color, but later changed it to a brighter red than originally to show an American color scheme.

Final

POSTER 5.jpg

Overall, I really like my poster design. I was super stuck on the gun design at first and felt like it didn't look like a gun until I added that border around it with type. My original color choices were pink and and a darker red which I still wasn't super happy with, but when I arranged the colors and saw that it looked like an American color scheme, I got really excited. I feel like the color, message, and design all match together to create a unified piece. I love it and it came out way better than I thought it would.
