PROJECT OVERVIEW:

In this project, we were put to the task to create packaging for a cylinder baking mix. We needed to use only two spot colors and create a backstory for the mix. It was a challenge to create a nutrition label and baking instructions, especially since there were no mixes for the cookies I did. There were a lot of steps to completing the cylinder project which made it a real challenge to overcome and I'm glad I got to experience it.

RESEARCH & BRAINSTORMING

MY RESEARCH:

For this project, my research felt all over the place due to the many ideas I couldn't stick with. I wanted to do Manly Muffins, but found myself my attracted to the modern girly package aesthetic. My Pininterest had a ton of new package design ideas that I fell in love with, but couldn't get any ideas of mine on paper. I knew I wanted a fun cartoon girl like from the brand Milky, but I also wanted something more grandma vintage-y.

SKETCHY:

This portion was the majority of this project. Every idea had to be redrawn over and over again in the most un-neat way possible until something stuck. I used my ipad for most of the sketches since it was easier to quickly draw out my ideas when I was running around. I felt I spent too much time working on cakes and patterns only to not use them in the end. I also was unsure of the girl's mouth which took a chunk of time to not even change when I was done. I wish a lot of my sketches made it to the final.

3 THUMBNAILS

THUMBNAILS:

I wish my thumbnails were nicer and cropped better but I am doing this last minute so might as well show something other than nothing. I rushed these when I was doing them because I think I didn't care too much how they looked, only that they got the idea across. The last one had the most thought in it, but it is hard to see the details since I scanned it too light.

DUMMY:

I didn't ever create three different ideas for the dummies, I only stuck with the one I knew I was wanting to do, but I could have at least made another one. I was just running out of time and ideas.

2 INTERMEDIATES

BETTER INTERMEDIATES:
I actually tried and took some time on these. After creating the Strawberry Cake Mix, I felt that it could be a good back up plan or even plan A if nobody liked Chiquita's Biscochitos. I could have used more markers though.

HARD PICK:

After spending way too much time creating the Selfishly Sweet dummy, I decided to go with the Chiquitas. I really wanted to make it work and I was proud of the work I did for it, but overall, a hard choice.

B&W COMPUTER PROGRESS

SMALL PROGRESS:

I wish I would have shown more, but the changes were so slight that I didn't want to waste time finding them. I made a big change after a critique and decided to cut her braids and push her to the front than the side. I think it looks way nicer than before and centers everything.

FINAL GIRL:

The B&W dummy really helped me see what was and wasn't working for me. I knew I needed to shrink everything in the front more and then create space on the sides to let the artwork breathe. I also needed to figure out how large certain logos should be in relation to the girl.

COLOR STUDIES & MINI APPLICATIONS

TOO MUCH COLOR:

This by far, took the longest. Hours and hours spent trying to figure out color, tints, and mixes without solving problems first. I was stuck, and still stuck, on that damn cookie. I needed to stay in a warm range and let more paper show through. The two colors I ended up choosing were two pink colors that were very close to each other. I know this probably wasn't smart, but I liked how they looked next to each other and with their tints. I spent too much time playing with brown.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

OVERALL:

This project was harder than I thought. Overthinking a project takes up so much time when moving on is the best action to do in a time sensitive project. I could have done the easier shortcake option, but I didn't want to give up on this. I wanted to make this for my cousin who always made this recipe for me, so either way, I was happy to work on it. :)
