BAG
FLAT CLEAN DIGITAL VERSION
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
In this project, we were put to the task to create packaging for plant bulbs in a tin tie flat bottom bag. We could also choose tubers or rhizomes instead of bulbs. I had to create three separate ideas for this project and create a dieline from an existing tin tie bag I found. This project challenged me to measure the dieline correcetly, choose three spot colors, and create a design on the package that represents the plant well. I ended up choosing tumeric rhizomes for my plant bulb, since I absolutely love tumeric and the culture around it. I wish I would have had better lighting to capture the colors better on my final. They look way darker than they are with more lighting.
RESEARCH & BRAINSTORMING

MY RESEARCH:
My research for this project was all over the place. I first started off by choosing my three plants. I chose a checkered Lilly, garlic bulb, and turmeric rhizome. I wanted something that could really stand out, so I researched their backgrounds, uses, and color schemes. Turmeric is grown traditionally in Eastern Asia, specifically India, and has a bright orange color. The Checkered Lilly is a very unique looking flower with bright purple petals, so I thought this would also be a good option. In the end, I thought my research for the Checkered Lilly was getting out of hand with Alice in Wonderland versus Eastern Indian patterns which are more grounded and not kitchey when compared to a children's fairytale.
SKETCHES & DOODLES
SKETCHY:
I wish I would have done more sketches on paper, I only used it to layout certain focus areas. I didn't even do one for my Tumeric idea which looking back now, would have been useful to feel out what looked appealing and what I wanted to proceed with trying. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to draw the checkered flower, but after taking a moment on the flower, realized I didn't have a solid idea for it, so I moved on.

THREE THUMBNAILS
FIRST THUMBNAILS:
I usually don't try with thumbnails, but I had hope and time at this first stage to work out what I wanted to show. I think my turmeric one could have been a bit more tighter like the other two, but it's something. It almost borders on sketches, but I'm going to count it as one of my three first thumbnails. I really liked my garlic drawing and wish I gave that idea more time, but that could be used for a future series project.

THREE THUMBNAIL DUMMIES

DUMMY:
I learned a lot making these little dummies. I realized when I was assembling my first one that I didn't know how to close the bottom of the bag. I had to rework my dieline after that and try again with dummy number two. I noticed that it wasn't still perfect so I tried again with dummy number three. It wasn't my final dieline change, but it could have worked, I just ended up cutting the sides to glue them later on.
2 INTERMEDIATES
INTERMEDIATES 2:
This was probably the last time I followed the guidelines to making sure we were doing every step to completing the assignment. This was where I didn't care which direction I took since I thought they were both fun ideas, but the class saw that there was more to work with, with the turmeric bag instead of the garlic bulb. I agree with this since I didn't have a solid idea for the front of the garlic bag.

B&W COMPUTER PROGRESSIONS

HARD PICK:
I probably spent 20 hours or more on figuring out what I wanted to do. I am very indecisive and wish I worked out this ore on paper than the computer. I thought I had a final design until the class pointed out that it looked like candy. I was devastated and went manic trying to find a design I liked. Luckily it worked out last minute, but I never want to do that again.

B&W COMPUTER DUMMY

BLACK AND WHITE:
I was finally happy to have finished the design part of this project, but I knew it was going to be a hard choice when it came to color. I noticed how hard it was to assemble heavyweight paper into folding into the bag properly.
COLOR STUDIES

NOT ENOUGH:
I realize that my color studies include only two of my final design, but I think that's because I did a ton on my previous black and white progressions so I knew what worked and didn't work next to which color. I felt bad that I worked a bit backwards on this, but I'm really happy with my color choices on the last one and thought I didn't need to dwell any longer on it.

WHAT I LEARNED:
This project was a real challenge. I took a lot of time to try to figure out what kind of design I wanted for this to make it look more plant like. I've never drawn or done any eastern Indian designs before so it added an extra step of research and fear proeeding with this, but I'm glad I did. I learned a lot about working on paper first and in black and white before moving on to the computer and colors. I didn't have a lot of time and didn't do any final hand comps for this which hurts me in the end. I am proud that I did my intermediates and thumbnails since I never usually do. Overall, I'm proud of my work and really hope people like it.
