KITSCH
FLAT CLEAN DIGITAL VERSION
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
For the Kitsch project, our goal was to create our own box dieline and assemble it with a creative and witty kitschy theme. We had to include the product we were selling, the given company name/info, and a window for the customer to see the product. I went with a anti-brainwashing chocolate truffle for my product and placed it in a pyramid box with an eye as the window.
RESEARCH & BRAINSTORMING
MY RESEARCH:
My ideas for this project were: anti-brainwashing candy, yadere kit (how to stalk a boy), and soundproof headphones for roommates with loud roommate couples. I started research on what candy I wanted to put in the box. I knew I wanted to do a pyramid box so I found a dieline in a book and changed everything. I was inspired by the Shane Dawson x Jeffery Star conspiracy makeup pallet with the triangle and the spiral in the background so I used the spiral in my design. I couldn't find any good expensive looking chocolate packaging so I just made up my own. I kind of thought of Wonka.
For the Yandere idea,
SKETCHES & DOODLES
SKETCHES:
I loved my sketches for my Cult Candy idea and kind of just threw the other two ideas on the paper as well. If I had more time, I would have done a lot more sketches for all three of them, but mostly the other ideas to give them some hope.
THREE THUMBNAILS
3 THUMBNAILS:
As you can see, I favored the first idea and had a lot more ideas for it. This helped confirm how I wanted to move forward with this project as I had little time and had the dieline, name, and overall theme for the Cult Candy idea.
THREE THUMBNAIL DUMMIES
ALMOST 3 THUMBNAIL DUMMIES:
I didn't get to making hardly anything, especially a third thumbnail for the headphone idea, but I made a good one for my Cult Candy idea. I even cut out the window! This helped me figure out placement of certain things and what I liked and didn't like.
FINAL FULL SIZE HAND DUMMY
FINAL HAND DUMMY:
I truly hate doing hand work, and this especially goes for final hand comps. I usually don't do these due to the time it takes, and I have a bad habit of procrastinating. Overall, this step is important to do before moving on to the computer since it helps make the transfer easier in the end.
B&W COMPUTER PROGRESSIONS
THANK YOU B&W:
These progressions were very helpful along the way as I was still figuring out certain areas like the right and left side's type and what to do with it. Even now I wish I had more time to change some things. I like seeing my progressions throughout this project since I think I came a long way and solved some problem areas.
B&W COMPUTER DUMMY
B&W DUMMY:
My B&W Dummy is assembled kind of rough. Don't mind the weak double sided tape popping out front the sides or the lack of the spiral on the eye. Overall, it printed well, but I should have printed it on the paper I was going to use for my final so I can see how it will score.
COLOR STUDIES
CONFUSED COLOR:
Funnily enough, color was the hardest part of this project, along with freeing up space on my laptop. I could not for the life of me figure out what colors look good on this project. I restricted myself with this since I put peppermint as a flavor. If I were to redo this I would have just put "chocolate truffle" without any flavor so my color scheme could be more diverse.
FINAL THOUGHTS
WHAT I LEARNED:
I learned that color can make or break a design. I went into this project trying to not look at color at first, but weirdly enough, it became a problem for me in the end. Just so many to choose from! Also I felt restricted to a color since my product was peppermint chocolate truffles, which usually has green, red, and brown. I wish I would have started thinking about this earlier and asked for help when it came to what was written on it.
