THE GOAL of this object was to challenge us to utilize type in a way where it forms an image without distorting the text in any way. I had to choose a part of the duck's body to show the original image while the rest of the body would be filled with text. The text had to be a short sentence, five to seven words long, and had to be something original. I originally wanted my phrase to be "I love you more than you'll know", but that didn't work in the end and I used "Please TRY NOT TO feed me bread." I thought this was cute since it relates to the duck and is educational. This project was not easy and challenged me to pick the perfect typefaces that would work to form the rest of the bird's body.

Project Overview

The theme of this project was our experience during the Covid Pandemic. I chose to write and design my Zine about my time listening and discovering Vaporwave music/genre during the lockdown. We needed 16 pages minimum with text and whatever we want to showcase our message. There were a lot of other requirements as well like bylines, table of contents and th euse of Covid in our title.

I originally had an extra page, but due to time constraints and issues with printing, I had to scrap it.

I researched a lot of the modern and past designs surrounding the 80's/90's Vaporwave style. A lot of checkered patterns with various shapes.

Sketches & Doodles

I really enjoyed the pool and mask sketch. I ended up creating the mask sketch as my extra page that never got put in into the final. The sketches did help me plan for the style of each page.

I had to redo this a couple times due to myself not paying attention to the layout. I should have done it one more time since I ended up making the same mistake in forgetting a page.

Intermediate/Initial Dummy

I forgot to document my blank dummy before I wrote in it and turned it in as my intermediate dummy, but overall this stage was helpful to visualize what I wanted.

Final Hand Reader Spreads

This stage was kind of annoying since I wish I put in more effort so that when it looked nice, I could have scanned it and turned it into my final dummy.

This took me way longer than it should. Others were smarter and did this stage early so they can have it printed out all nice while I hand made mine.

Since my project was very color heavy, I just created this in color first, then printed it in black and white. I just wasn't sure how to make it without color first.

Same as the dummy, but laid out all nice to see how it will be folded and printed. Turns out that I should have done this stage in Indesign...

Overall this Zine project was not fun at all and had caused many sleepless nights, like this one,and dark thoughts, but I do like how I created my Zine project and how I brought my vision/story to life.

I think I learned some important lessons: learn how to make a book, don't do things last minute, trust no one, and school was never meant to be fun. 10/10 for my design though.
